Pneumatic Tubes Meet Propellers: Matternet and Swisslog Wire Drone Delivery Into 2,300 Hospitals

On 29 October, Matternet and TransLogic, the Swisslog Healthcare unit behind hospital pneumatic tube systems, announced a partnership that puts an autonomous delivery drone on the same price sheet as the tube network itself — opening a sales channel into more than 3,000 hospitals worldwide.

What was announced

TransLogic's sales team becomes a distribution channel for Matternet's next-generation M3 delivery system across its installed base of more than 3,000 hospitals globally, including over 2,300 in North America. The first year of the partnership will focus on hospital systems in California, Florida and Arizona.

The pitch is a single automated network that runs from the pneumatic tube station inside a hospital to the satellite facilities outside it, replacing fragmented manual deliveries between buildings. The two companies also plan to explore extending the collaboration to installation, support and maintenance through Swisslog Healthcare's field service organization — meaning the drone would be sold and serviced much like the tube network it complements.

The aircraft at the center of the deal

The M3 carries packages up to 11 pounds (5 kg) within a 10-mile (16 km) service radius, flies fully autonomously, and is stored and recharged between flights in the compact M3 Dock, which fits on a hospital rooftop or other unused space. Matternet unveiled the platform on 28 September, with commercial service targeted for the second half of 2027, subject to development, testing and regulatory approvals.

The company's M2 remains the only drone delivery system to hold both a standard FAA Type Certificate and a Production Certificate, and Matternet has flown for health systems since 2017 in Europe and 2019 in the US, transporting lab samples, vaccines, pathology specimens and specialty pharmaceuticals. In other words, the market entry is not a startup experiment but a distribution deal grafted onto nine years of hospital-route operating history.

Why hospital logistics is a quietly good market

Every day, a major hospital moves hundreds of small urgent packages — medications, lab specimens, supplies — between buildings, mostly by ground courier: a process that is slow and costly. Inside the walls, that movement has long been automated by pneumatic tube systems; the gap sits between the buildings.

The real value of this partnership is not the aircraft but the channel. Hospitals that already buy transport automation from TransLogic will be offered drones by a vendor they already trust, which removes the hardest step in drone sales: the first conversation with procurement. As Matternet's founder and CEO described it, a lab specimen may fly from a remote clinic to the central lab, then ride the tube to its bench — end-to-end automation with no manual handoff in between.

The caveats, and what buyers should take from it

Some honest caveats: the announcement names no hospitals, no dollar figures and no order counts. The M3 has no FAA type certificate yet, so the deal is a market-access play ahead of certification, and a partnership does not guarantee a single deployment — the impact depends on hospital adoption and successful rollouts.

For component buyers, the signal is still worth reading. Short-range autonomous delivery multirotors are beginning to scale through established distribution channels rather than one-off direct sales, and that shifts demand toward powertrains engineered for dock cycles — frequent takeoffs and landings, short missions, long dwell times — rather than endurance records. When sourcing for this class, ask for continuous ratings and thermal data at realistic duty cycles, not just peak numbers, and confirm serviceability once a fleet is installed at a rooftop dock.
